OTOPLASTY

Otoplasty (Prominent Ear)

The ear is a very unobtrusive organ when it is in normal shape and placement. The distinctive or prominent ear can cause visual and mental problems especially from childhood. Especially children with school-age and with prominent ear disorder may be subjected to cynical behaviors by their friends. Therefore, it is recommended to perform this operation before the children starts to school.

There are more than 200 techniques used in prominent ear surgeries in the world. These methods are mainly divided into sutured methods and methods related to cartilage cutting. We use sutured methods because these are reversible in our patients and do not damage the cartilage structure.

Prominent ear surgery is performed under general anesthesia in childhood and can be performed under local anesthesia in adult age. About 2 hours after this operation, we recommend that our patients use the band for 24 hours in first 3 weeks.

Within 10 days, the swelling of the ear is completely recovered, and our patients can return to normal work and daily life after 10 days.

The Procedure

We perform the procedure under local anaesthetic and oral sedation. It takes about 1 hour to complete. No cutting is required as special sutures are “woven” into the ear under the skin though small punctures; the sutures remain permanently and are not visible or palpable after a short healing time. The results are instant with no scarring. It is recommended to wear a tennis-style headband in bed for 1-2 weeks. Very short downtime, many patients return to work after a couple of days.

What are the long-term results?

The results are immediate and permanent with natural long-term results. In general, after 3-6 months the cartilage develops a ‘memory’ of the newly introduced anti helical fold, ensuring a lasting cosmetic correction.

Does the suture/thread have to be removed?

The suture used is a clear, non-dissolving and non-visible material that does not have to be removed.

Is there scarring?

There is no scarring associated with this particular procedure as there is no cutting and only the inclusion of clear permanent sutures.

What will my ears look and feel like straight after the procedure?

Immediately after the procedure there will be some minor bruising, swelling and tenderness. These are generally not significant enough to impede on normal day to day activities and can easily be concealed if required. Additionally, patients are provided with adequate pain relief medication for the minor discomfort that is experienced.

Can I play sports after the operation?

Contact sports that involve or have the potential to involve direct trauma to the ears (e.g. rugby or boxing) is advised against in the first 3-6 months. All other sports and training can generally be resumed after about 1-2 weeks post-procedure.
